Raghava Travels was the one and only transportation from my village to the nearest town, Payyanur, in early 1980s. Raghava Travels was an old van running between Puthur and Payyanur through my village Kozhummal. Before this service come to our village, the villagers had no other option to go to Payyanur except take a walk to Onakunnu or go to Swamimuk and wait for the arrival of transport bus for hours. The van service starts from the ground near to Puthur Shiva Temple. Since there were no other buses and jeep or auto service is expensive, we had no other options to reach Payyanur, other than depending on this van service. College students, govt employees, beedi workers, farmers going with their crops suh as copra, cashew nuts, areca nuts etc to sell the merchant at Payyanur were the frequent travellers in this van service. The bus doesn't have seats as in the modern buses, except two lengthy wooden seats at both sides. The morning service is at 8:30 AM to Payyanur and it would be totally packed. More than that more poeple enjoyed the travel on top of the van and on the iron stairs at the back of the van. They were allowed to travel like this till the national highway at Onakunnu only. Most of the people gets down at Onakunnu. Till early 1980s there was no bridge to connect to Onakunnu for big vehicles. There was only a wooden bridge that cannot carry heavy vehicles. So when the bus reach Kattachery all passengers have to get down. The bus staff will then place a hard wooden piece which will act as a temporary bridge to Onakunnu. This bridge is known as Kuppippalam. Later a concrete bridge was built in 1980s. The van gets almost empty when it reaches Onakunnu as most of the students and beedi workers and other passengers gets down there. The van was not permitted to enter Payyanur bus stand. So it stops at Payyanur Bazar. Now there are private and KSRTC buses passing through the village all the time. But we still remembers Raghava travels.
